Color and readability

Some text is hard to read against its background

The text color and the background color are too close, for example light gray on white. There isn't enough contrast between them.

Who it affects

People with low vision, older readers, and anyone reading on a phone in bright light.

Why it matters

Faint text is tiring or impossible to read. Some people miss the information entirely.

How to fix it

  1. Use dark text on a light background, or light text on a dark one.
  2. Check your colors with a free contrast checker, such as WebAIM's. Normal text needs a ratio of at least 4.5 to 1.
  3. Change the colors in the original file (for example Word or InDesign), then create the PDF again.

What RemeDocs does

RemeDocs darkens some hard-to-read text automatically. Colors that are part of the design must be changed in the original file.
