Color and readability

Color alone is used to show meaning

Some information is shown only by color, such as red text for overdue items or a chart legend that matches by color alone.

Who it affects

People who are color blind, have low vision, or print in black and white.

Why it matters

If you can't tell the colors apart, you miss the information.

How to fix it

  1. Add a second clue next to the color, such as a word, symbol, pattern or label, for example "Overdue" as well as red.
  2. In charts, label the lines or bars directly instead of relying on a color legend.

What RemeDocs does

This depends on the design, so it has to be changed in the original file.
