Some symbols can't be read aloud

Some characters use a special font code, such as icons, arrows or check marks from a symbol font. A screen reader can't turn them into words.

Who it affects

People who use screen readers.

Why it matters

The symbols are skipped or read as nonsense. If a symbol carries meaning, like a check mark for "yes", that meaning is lost.

How to fix it

  1. In the original file, use real text instead of symbol fonts, such as the word "Yes" instead of a check mark.
  2. In Adobe Acrobat Pro: give the symbol a text equivalent (called Actual Text) in the Tags panel.

What RemeDocs does

RemeDocs flags these so a person can check them.
