Structure and reading order
Headings are missing or out of order
Headings should be marked as headings, and their levels should go in order: a main heading, then sub-headings under it, without skipping a level.
Who it affects
People who use screen readers. They often jump from heading to heading to find what they need.
Why it matters
If headings are just bold text, or the levels jump around, readers cannot skim the document or understand how it is organized.
How to fix it
- In Word: apply the Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3 styles from the Home tab instead of making text big and bold by hand.
- Use one Heading 1 for the title, Heading 2 for main sections and Heading 3 for parts of those sections.
- Don't skip levels, for example from Heading 1 straight to Heading 3.
What RemeDocs does
RemeDocs finds headings and fixes their levels automatically. Check any it was unsure about.
